Creamy garlic parmesan orzo is a quick and comforting dish made with tender orzo pasta simmered in a flavorful garlic and shallot sauté, enriched with vegetable broth, cream, and freshly grated Parmesan. Ready in just 20 minutes, it’s perfect as a hearty side or a light main meal, garnished with fresh parsley for a burst of color and freshness.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

For the Orzo Base

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon (20 g) butter
  • 1 large shallot, finely chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • ¼ teaspoon red chili flakes (optional)
  • 2 cups (300 g) orzo
  • 2 ½ cups (600 ml) vegetable broth

For the Creamy Sauce

  • 1 cup (200 ml) half and half (single cream)
  • ½ cup (50 g) freshly grated Parmesan
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • A handful fresh parsley, to garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat fats: In a large skillet or pan, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat until the butter is melted, creating a flavorful base for the dish.
  2. Sauté aromatics: Add the finely chopped shallot and garlic to the pan. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until the shallot becomes translucent and the garlic releases its fragrant aroma.
  3. Add spice and orzo: Stir in the red chili flakes if using, then add the dry orzo pasta. Toss to coat the orzo evenly with the oil and butter mixture.
  4. Cook orzo in broth: Pour the vegetable broth into the pan and stir to combine. Bring this mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low to let it simmer gently.
  5. Simmer until tender: Let the orzo simmer for 10-15 minutes or until it is tender and most of the broth has been absorbed, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  6. Add cream: Pour in the half and half (single cream) and stir to incorporate. Warm the mixture over low heat until it is hot throughout but not boiling to maintain creaminess.
  7. Finish with cheese and seasoning: Stir in the freshly grated Parmesan cheese until melted and creamy. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
  8. Garnish and serve: Remove from the heat and sprinkle with a handful of fresh parsley to add a fresh finish and color. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • Substitute vegetable broth with chicken broth for a non-vegetarian option.
  • For a richer flavor, use heavy cream instead of half and half.
  • Adjust the red chili flakes to your preferred spice level or omit for no heat.
  • To make it gluten-free, substitute orzo with gluten-free pasta shapes or rice.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat gently with a splash of cream or broth.
