Ingredients
Sausage Mixture
- 1 lb breakfast sausage (spicy or mild)
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste (optional)
Crescent Roll Layers
- 2 (8 ounce) cans refrigerated crescent rolls
Topping
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
- Cook Sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until it is fully browned and broken into crumbles. Drain any excess grease to avoid a greasy casserole.
- Combine Sausage and Cream Cheese: Add the softened cream cheese to the hot cooked sausage. Stir continuously until the mixture is well combined and creamy. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper if desired to enhance flavor.
- Prepare Bottom Crescent Roll Layer: Open one can of crescent rolls and unroll the dough. Lay it flat evenly at the bottom of the greased baking dish. Pinch the seams together to form a smooth, continuous crust base.
- Add Sausage Mixture and Cheese: Evenly spread the sausage and cream cheese mixture over the bottom crescent roll layer. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese uniformly on top of the sausage mixture.
- Top with Second Crescent Roll Layer: Open the second can of crescent rolls and unroll the dough. Lay it carefully over the sausage and cheese filling, pinching the seams to create a smooth top crust that encloses the filling.
- Bake the Casserole: Place the casserole in the oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the crescent roll crust is golden brown and cooked through. If the top begins to brown too quickly, cover loosely with aluminum foil for the last 5 to 7 minutes to prevent burning.
- Rest and Serve: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. This helps it firm up for easier slicing. Cut into squares and serve warm for best flavor and texture.
Notes
- For extra flavor and texture, consider mixing in chopped cooked onions, diced bell peppers, or jalapeños with the sausage before layering.
- This casserole can be assembled the night before and refrigerated. Bake fresh the next day for a convenient meal.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat them in the oven to preserve the crispiness of the crust.
