Ingredients
For the Sloppy Joe Mixture
- 1 lb Ground Beef (consider using lean ground turkey or lentils for a lighter option)
- 1 medium Onion (can substitute with shallots or omit)
- 2 cloves Garlic, minced (fresh for best flavor)
- 1 cup Sloppy Joe Sauce (mix tomato sauce with a bit of ketchup as a substitute if needed)
- 2 tbsp Tomato Paste (optional; enhances flavor)
- Salt, to taste
- Black Pepper, to taste
For the Garlic Bread Base
- 1 loaf Garlic Bread (thick-cut bread—store-bought or homemade)
For the Topping
- 2 cups Shredded Mozzarella or Mozzarella-Cheddar Blend (provolone or cheddar also make great substitutes)
- Fresh Parsley, to taste (optional; adds freshness)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the garlic bread slices with toppings.
- Cook Ground Beef and Onion: In a large skillet over medium heat, add ground beef and diced onion. Cook for about 6–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned and the onion has softened.
- Sauté Garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
- Simmer Sauce: Add the sloppy joe sauce and optional tomato paste to the skillet. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Let the mixture simmer for 3–5 minutes to meld the flavors and thicken slightly.
- Prepare Garlic Bread: Arrange the garlic bread slices cut side up on a baking sheet for easy topping and baking.
- Assemble Sloppy Joe Garlic Bread: Spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly over each slice of garlic bread, distributing the meat mixture fully.
- Add Cheese: Sprinkle a generous amount of shredded mozzarella or your chosen cheese blend evenly over the topped bread slices.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and lightly golden on top.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the slices cool slightly. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley if desired, then serve warm for a satisfying dinner.
Notes
- For a lighter version, substitute ground beef with lean ground turkey or lentils.
- If you don’t have sloppy joe sauce, mix tomato sauce with a bit of ketchup as a good alternative.
- The tomato paste is optional but helps deepen the flavor of the meat sauce.
- Provolone or cheddar cheese can be used instead of mozzarella for a different cheese flavor.
- Fresh parsley adds a fresh pop of color and flavor but can be omitted if not available.
- Use thick-cut garlic bread for better structural support to hold the meat and cheese toppings.
